Ylang Ylang / Cananga Tree = Cananga odorata

Family: Annonaceae

It's a very fast-growing tree, its growth exceed

5 m (15 feet) per year and attains an average 

height of 12m (40 feet) or more.

The flower is drooping, long-stalked with 

six narrow, green - yellow petals and

yields a highly fragrant essential oil.

The oil is widely used in perfumery for oriental or 

floral themed perfumes like Chanel #5.

一年に5メートルという速さで育つ木！フルサイズになるのに

3年かからないくらいということ？すごいな。

随分離れたところまで花の香りがとどく、とありましたが、

撮影中、別ににおいは感じませんでした・・・・

花から取れるオイルは香水業界で使われ、かの有名な

シャネルの5番にも入っているのだそうです。

Lancepod Tree / Lilac Tree = Lonchocarpus violaceus

Family: Faboideae / Leguminosae

Native to Africa

The tree becomes 25 to 35 feet in height,

produces lilac-fragrant, lavender flowers during

the late summer / fall.

ライラックの花の香りの、ラベンダー色の花を、夏の終わりから
秋にかけてつけはじめます。
ちょうどこの日、チラホラと花が見え始めたところ。

残念ながら大きな木なので、匂いを試す事はできませんでした。

ハチが好む花、と説明を読みましたが、そういえば
一杯花の周りにいました。写真にも写ってました！

上の写真、2週間ほど経ったので花が増えているだろうかと
楽しみに行ってみたら、他に咲いた様子もなく、
この間の花がもう、実になっていました。
小さいマメ！
I went back there after about two weeks expecting
more and a lot of flowers, but there was none.
The same flower branch became like this.
A little beans!

Red Cassia

Red Cassia = Cassia roxburghii

Family: Leguminosae / Fabaceae

Native to Sri Lanka, southern India

The flower petals are about a half inch(1.3cm),

with long and yellow stamens.

The fruit does not split open by itself (=indehiscent),

8-12 " long and less than 1" in diameter.

とても大きな木です。枝一杯に花をつけたところは

壮大な眺めだろうと思います。この日、何箇所かにしか

花がついていませんでしたが、咲き始めであろう事を願います。

もう少ししたらまた行ってみよ！

Clown Fig / Mosaic Fig = Ficus aspera

Family: Moraceae

Origin: Southern Pacific

The leaves have white and gray - green

blotches on a dark green background,

could be about 25 cm long.

The fruit about 2 cm (less than a inch) 

with hairs outside and looks just like a peach.

観賞用の葉として知っていましたが、まるで桃そのものの

実を見つけたときはビックリしました。

葉と言い、実といい、なんとおしゃれな植物！

Sapodilla / Naseberry

Naseberry / Sapodilla = Manilkara zapota

Family: Sapotaceae

Origin: Mexico, Central America

The flowers are small and whitish, and produce 

a brown fruit about 2 - 4" long and 2" wide.

Inside the fruit is yellowish, 
may be coarse and somewhat grainy or smooth,
becomes soft and very juicy.
It's sweet flavor resembles that of a pear or caramel.
"Chicle", the latex obtained from the bark,
has been used as a chewing gum base for many years.

大体５cm位の丸い実は、梨のような、キャラメルのような、

ジューシーで甘いらしい。今度割ってみよう。

木の幹、樹皮の下から取れる、白い粘液性のミルクのような

「チクル」は、チューインガムの原料として使われる。

和名はチューインガムの木、だそうです。

Joewood = Jacquinia keyensis

Family: Theophrastaceae

Native to Florida, fairly common in the Keys

along the ecotone between mangrove swamps

and hammocks.

Medium to large shrub, rarely a small tree.

Trunks short and straight with thin bark, smooth 

and gray.  Leaves leathery about 1-3" long.

Tamarind = Tamarindus indica

Family: Fabaceae

Native to tropical Africa, especially Sudan

The flowers are orchid-like, one inch size, 

yellow with orange or red streaks.

Buds are pink until the flowers bloom.

The fruit is an indehiscent (doesn't split open 

by itself) legume, 12 - 15 cm (3-6") long,

with a hard brown shell.

It has a fleshy, juicy pulp, tastes sweet and sour,

and is high in acid, sugar, Vitamin B and calcium.

The fruit is used in jam, blended into juices,

or sweetened drinks, sorbets, ice creams.....

Also, it is found in Worcestershire sauce and HP sauce.

タマリンドという名は知っていたけど、きれいだなと思って見てた

この大きな木の、ぶら下がった花、これがそうだとは。

実は大きなマメ、固いサヤで、しっかり茶色ー黒になったら

食べられるのだそうです。甘味料につかったり砂糖漬けにしたり、

国によっていろいろ、用途が広いようです。
