Red Saddlebags (Dragonfly)

Red Saddlebags = Tramea onusta

Family: Libellulidae (Skimmer Dragonfly Family)

It has the dark band at the base

of each hind wing.

It looks like a flower pattern when

I spotted this one flying.

This photo was taken from under 

the dragonfly, he didn't come lower.

ヘンなトンボを見かけました。

ふっと見上げたら花模様の何かが飛んでいる、みたいな。

トンボは何度も同じ所に戻ってきますから、

この木のテッペンを狙って待っていました。

珍しい種類というほどではないけれど、
見つけてすごくラッキーだったなあって感じらしい。

                         Crown of Thorns =  Euphorbia milii
　　　　　　　　　Family: Euphorbiaceae
　　　　　　　　　Native to Madagascar
                     Climbing shrub to 1.8m (6') with densely
                spiny stems.  The spines up to 3cm (1"+) long,
                   straight and slender, to help scramble over 
                                           other plants.
                         Leaves 3.5cm long, 1.5cm broad.
                 Flowers are very small, subtended by a pair 

of red (variety could be white or pink) 

petal-like bracts 12 mm (1/2") broad.

茎はこんなにトゲトゲ、知らずにブッシュに踏み込んだら
大変です。このトゲは、他の植物にくっついていきやすいように。
花の赤い部分（種類によって、白いもの、ピンク
のものがある）はガク、で、2枚が向き合っています。
ちなみに、Crown of Thorn　とは、イエス様が頭に
おかぶりになった、茨のかんむりをさす言葉です。

Coco Plum = Chrysobalanus icaco

Family: Chrysobalanaceae (Coco Plum Family)

Native to Florida, found in Hammocks, canal edges, 

coastal swamps and moist wetlands

Flowers are white in clusters, 1/3"

have a delicate fragrance.

Fruits 1 1/2", dark purple when ripe, used in jam.

これは1インチ（2.5cm）位の、熟した色でした。

ちょうどブドウのような、巨峰の皮を手で

むいたときと同じ感じ、現れた白い実の感じもそっくり。

Native to Florida

Climbing vine with clusters of white to pink,

cylindrical, 1/3" flowers.

Leaves heart- to arrowhead-shaped.

Wet woods, thickets, swamp edges.

Dahoon Holly

Dahoon Holly = Ilex cassine
Family: Aquifoliaceae

Small to medium tree, found in
fresh water swamps, pond- and lake-sides.
Trunk short, branching near the ground,
often covered with numeroun lichens.
Leaves flat, 2-4" long.
Fruit 1/4", red, orange and yellow.

小さい木で秋にたくさんの赤い実をつけます。
花が同時に咲いていたりする・・・
枝が重そうに垂れるくらい、沢山の実がつき、
食べられるけれどもおいしくないそうです。
鳥のためにとっておきましょう。

Common Primrose Willow = Ludwigia peruviana

Family: Onagraceae (evening primrose)

This plant grows in shallow water areas,

such as marshy shores, wet clearings,

ditches and drainage canals,

mainly central and south Florida.

The plant is about 12" tall, 

the four petal flower about 2".

何気ない草むら、特に池、カナルなどの水辺に

ハッとするような鮮やかな黄色が目をひくのです。

チョウが喜ぶ甘いネクターを潜めています。
