Mayfly

Mayfly = Rhithrogena germanica
Order: Ephemeroptera
They've been placed into a group of insects 
termed the Palaeoptera, which also contains
dragonflies and damselflies.

They are aquatic insects.
Immature stage of life usually lasts one year
in fresh water, but the adults are short-lived,
from a few minutes to a few days.

This one was on my car window and was very tiny, 
but the adult can be the size of 3/4"
公園で車に戻ると運転席の窓にこんなのがくっついていました。
マクロレンズも持っていなくて、300mmレンズでなんとか。
長い子供時代を終わると、大人になってすぐに
死んでしまうという、かわいそうなムシ。
大きく見ると、トンボと同じ種族。
和名:カゲロウ

Wild Balsam Apple = Momordica charantia
Family: Cucurbitaceae

Highly climbing vine, the stem has curly tendrils 
that wrap around whatever it can to support.
The yellow flower 1 1/4" and Fruit orange 5" 
the mature orange rind splits and expose
the red seeds,  ripe fruit and seeds are toxic.

花は小さくて可憐なのですが、まるでゴム製のおもちゃのような
オレンジ色の実、自然にオープンすると中には真っ赤な種、
というのはちょっとドギツイ感じです。

Julia Butterfly

Julia = Dryas iulia    3 3/8"
Family: Nymphalidae
Native to Brazil to south Texas, and Florida

"iulia" often misspelled as "Julia" and became
it's common name.

Its wingspan ranges from 82 mm to 92mm
(3 1/4" to 3 5/8")
ラテン名の「IULIA」がスペルミスで「JULIA」になり、
そのまま俗称として使われています。
オレンジ色のチョウはたくさんいますが、
Juliaさんは一番模様が少なくて地味なお方です。
反対側はもっと地味な茶色・・・・でもきれいですよ。

Spanish Moss

Spanish Moss = Tillandsia usneoides
Family: Bromeliaceae

Despite its name, this is not biologically related to
either mosses or lichens.
The plant consists of a slender stem, curved or curly, 
heavily scaled leaves 2- 6 cm long and
1 mm broad, that grow in chain-like fashion,
hanging up to 6 m in length.
The plant has no aerial roots and 
it's flowers are tiny.

根というものがなく、カールした茎と葉(どこが茎で
どこが葉なのだろう・・・)がチェーンのようにつながって、
最高6メートルくらいの丈で下がっています。
沢山ぶら下がっていると不気味で幽霊屋敷の木みたいです。

2 to 4 feet tall, the purple flowers peak in Fall

名もないボサボサの草、かと思いきや、ある日紫色になって
陽に輝いていたり、雨粒でキラキラしていたり、
とてもきれいで、ガーデンデザインにもよく使われる草のようです。
これも相当後になって偶然名前を見つけました。

This one is very attractive to butterflies, bees 
and birds - good nectar source - and  a member of 
the Borage or Forget-me-Not family

ずっと名前の分からない花としてファイルに入ったままでしたが
他の花の名前を調べているうちに、偶然、突然、判明しました。
勿忘草と同じファミリー(科)なのだそうです。
小さいのに、チョウにネクターを供給する重要な花らしいです。

Bushy Bluestem / Bushy Beardgrass
= Andropogon glomeratus
Family: poaceae
Native to Americas

This grass reaches heights of 6' (2 m) and
has large, fluffy, cream-colored "inflorescences"
in other words, "flower clusters".
Each dense and tufted inflorescences has 
several pairs of hairy "spikelets".

ブルーステム、って、どこがブルーなんだろう、と
思っていたら、葉がブルーグリーンらしいけれど
花に気をとられていて葉なんか見なかった・・・

同じ場所で、またキラキラがきれいだから写真を撮ってしまった。
でも比べてみると、茎が随分枯れ色になってきている・・・

This insect is a pest, sucks plant juices and causes 
damage to citrus and roses.
Releases foul-smelling secretion when disturbed.

フロリダの大事なオレンジ類、バラ、その他植物の
水分を吸い取るのでペスト指定されている虫のようです。
これは遠くから撮りましたが、ジャマをされると臭いにおいを
出すらしいので要注意。近くじゃなくてよかった。

Creeping Cucumber

Creeping Cucumber = Melothria pendula
Family: Cucurbitaceae

This plant is a vine, 3' or more long.
The leaves about 1" long, and the surfaces are
like very fine velcro, sticky to the touch.
The flowers are very small, less than  
a half inch in diameter.
The fruit about a inch, green to purple-black.
The opened fruit smells like unripe watermelon.

他の植物につるをのばしてくっついています。直径1cm位の
黄色い花、少しザラザラの葉、クルクルのつる、
そして小指の先くらいのスイカ!
緑の実はムラサキっぽい黒にまでなるらしいです。
食べられるかどうかは州によって意見が違うとか・・・・
不明という事ですね、試してみたくはないですね・・・

This flower attracts bees and butterflies,
however, it spreads quickly and can become a pest.

どんどん広がって増えるので困り者にされそうな花。
それにしちゃきれい過ぎる・・・・チョウもハチも好んで
寄ってくるというから、役に立ってもいるのだろうに・・・・

The leaves are a good food source to caterpillars,
and the nectar is extremely popular source with
a wide variety of butterflies such as Gulf Fritillary, 
Julia, Orange Sulphur...etc etc

和名:ジャマイカクマツヅラ
チョウのいる所、この花あり。また、この花のある所に
チョウあり。鮮やかなムラサキにチョウがとまると
ほんとにキレイですね。葉もチョウが幼虫のうちから
栄養補給をしているのだとか。幼いうちに知った味が
チョウに成長してからも忘れられないといったとこかしら。

 The fresh leaves are consumed in bush tea
as a "cooling" tonic and blood cleanser,
to treat "asthma" and "ulcerated stomachs"
新鮮な葉は気を静めたり血を清めるとして
お茶にして飲まれることもあり、
喘息や胃潰瘍に良いとされるが
微小ながら身体の部分に影響する毒性が
リポートされてもいます。

Origin: Brazil

The same family of Poison Ivy, 
it is a common source of skin irritation
as well as a cause of respiratory problems.
This noxious invasive weedy tree has become 

established as a pest species in Florida,
Texas, Hawaii and California, 

it chokes out native vegetation.

地元の植物に害のある、人間にも呼吸系、皮膚への刺激性のある植物
として、フロリダ、テキサス、ハワイ、カリフォルニアでペストに指定されている。
花は緑がかった白、実の大きさ4-5ミリ
