Brown Basilisk / Jesus Christ Lizard = Basiliscus vittatus

Family: Corytophanidae

Native to Panama, Belize, Colombia and Costa Rica,

but have been introduced into the State of Florida

as a feral species.

*They are under a foot in length. Females lay about

2-18 eggs, 5 to 8 times a year.

*They have a name as Jesus Christ Lizard because

they can run about 10 to 20 m on the water without sinking.

Slapping their long-toed feet hard against the water, 

they create a tiny air pocket that keeps them from sinking.

コスタリカなどからフロリダに人為的に持ち込まれた種。

サイズは３０cmを越えません。

メスの産む卵が一回に２～１８個、それを一年に５～８回、

というから、どんどん繁殖してしまったわけです。

イエスキリストが水の上を歩いたところからこの名前をもらいました。

そう、彼らは水の上を沈まずに１０～２０ｍ走れるのです。

長い足指を水にたたきつけ、どういう風にかそおに小さな

エアポケットみたいなものを作り出すため、そしてまあ

走る速度も速い、それで沈まないのですね。
